1 Easy Way To Kill Perfectionism
Featured Scribbles from Jon Acuff (author of stuffchristianslike.net).
Okay, I have to admit that once in my life, I nearly suffered from OCD(obsessive-compulsive disorder). Perfectionism is a word too much for a description but let’s just say that I want my things organized, as much as I can, in most ways I could. But, that was before.
When I realized how my life cluttered in God’s eyes, this took me to change and accept that things mess up sometimes and I do mess up sometimes. It took a lot of prayer for me to allow moments of dirty plates in the kitchen sink, scattered clothes in the closet and worst, a bad hair day! Now I know that God alone is perfect and I will never be perfect — for I am a work in process to be perfected in God’s hands. I learned to become a clay and trusted Him as my Potter.
With that truth, hope you’ll relate to this article from Jon Acuff’s blog. Enjoy and God bless!
I wanted to start things with a bang. To come out of the gates strong. To quickly establish a degree of awesomeness.
In other words, I wanted this post to be perfect.
So I sat on it for weeks. I worried about it for weeks. All the while pushing back the launch of this site. I allowed perfectionism to cripple me even while I wrote a new book that touched on that very problem. Finally, a coworker in a meeting challenged me and said, “Why don’t you just write about perfectionism in your first post?”
She was right. I don’t like blogs about theories. I like blogs about life. And right now in my own life, I’m wrestling with perfectionism. Plus, I can’t be the only one who struggles with it. I can’t be the only one who in pursuing a dream gets tripped up by it.
Believing that, I decided to share 1 easy tip to kill perfectionism today that has helped me write three books, find my dream job and publish this post. Read more here →

Thank you for meeting me here! I purposely created this blog to share the joy I have found in Jesus Christ and in living for Him everyday. Life may not give you enough reasons to smile but God does. You can find more of that

Hi Joyce I agree wordly perfectionism is the pits but God tells us we must seek perfection in Love, as you can see below but we can’t do it in the flesh only in Christ Jesus as The Holy Spirit empowers us.
Matthew 5:48 Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in Heaven is perfect.
Hebrews 6:1 Therefore leaving the principles of the doctrine of Christ, let us go on unto perfection; not laying again the foundation of repentance from dead works, and of faith toward God,
1Peter 5:10 But the God of all grace, who hath called us unto His eternal glory by Christ Jesus, after that ye have suffered a while, make you perfect, stablish, strengthen, settle you.
2 Corinthians 7 1Having therefore these promises, dearly beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God.
2Timithy 3:17 That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works.
1 John 4:17-19 Herein is our Love made perfect, that we may have boldness in the day of judgment: because as He is, so are we in this world. There is no fear in Love; but perfect Love casteth out fear: because fear hath torment. He that feareth is not made perfect in Love. We Love Him, because He first Loved us.
Powerful words of Hope – Christian Love Anne.
Hello Anne, those are powerful verses.
God wants us to be perfect (to interpret, means ”to be mature”) in our lives and walks with Him. God bless! He is indeed our first love
Hi Joyce yes it does mean maturity and not as it is sometimes implied it means being perfected in Christ Jesus which is being Born again of God’s seed as you can see below and this means we no longer continue to sin which is Perfection so we no longer fear torment or punishment as 1 John 4:17-19 tells us. But as I said it is not what the world calls being perfect like body, ability etc but what God’s tells us and He says it’s Holiness and being cleansed of all unrighteousness which means we are mature and Perfected. I have many other Scriptures that confirms this if your wanting them and just as a warning when translating from the Greek, we need to remember words have been changed over time according to man’s own understanding, this is why we need to see the whole Scripture which God shows us..
1JOHN 3:1-11 (9) No one who is born of God will continue to sin, because God’s seed remains in him; he cannot go on sinning, because he has been born of God.
Christian Love Anne.

Of course, we fellowship with His word and I’m always glad to have your verses and feedback. God bless Anne
lets not impost it to others if we can do it on our own…thanks Joyce…by the way, Jon Acuff looks like Jason Mraz
I agree to that. I can so relate recalling my previous work, where perfectionism is a must but overlooked on one’s own life. Haha! I hardly noticed that, so I checked Jon’s blog again and stared at him for a while, and say, ”ah-ah, Nitoy is right” hahah!
Great post Joyce, I have learned how not to be a perfectionist…ok mostly….some.
Perfectionism is a disease. For me anyway, I just need to do my best, and realize that, that is enough. Only our Lord was perfect!
Haha
you’re not alone Greg. Count me in
Have you felt that your best ain’t enough before? because it was my experience. When we are in the Lord, He requires our perfect heart of submission, the rest can come off easily after surrendering to Him. Thanks for reading
Love this post Joyce.
I agree withwriting gomer. Perfectionism is a disease.
I cannot tell you how much I cringe when I see a mistake on my blog.
It causes great dis-ease in me.
The disease is being healed in my day by day.
“90% perfect and published always changes more lives than 100% perfect and stuck in your head.”
Love the truth of that quote.
Wow, I like it how you put disease and dis-ease go together Deb
Our Lord is the greatest physician, it’s so amazing how He can heal our dis-ease(s)! God bless!
Joyce
I loved this line you wrote: for I am a work in process to be perfected in God’s hands
God Bless
susie
Hi Susie, I got that from the song, ”The Potter’s Hand”. It’s a very real and touching song about relying to Him daily. Thanks for reading
excellent post and I have also now subscribed to Jon’s blog. Thanks SO much Joyce. Fabulous!
Thanks Helen, He’s such a good read!
Joyce, the other commenters are so correct: self-designed perfectionism is a total soul-stealer. God has the master plan, the perfect design for our lives. We do NOT need to mess it up by trying to reinvent the wheel, for crying out loud. And the photo at the top of this post is so wonderful. I actually knew a neighbory lady years ago who actually went out in the dark with a flashlight to trim along her walkways with scissors each time she paid to have a teenager mow her lawn. She did not want to hurt his feelings by having him see her do this. There must have been angels up there shaking their heads, tut-tutting and laughing all at the same time over that one!
Hahaha.. that’s really worth head-shaking Granbee, and I relate to that in some point of my life before. Thanks to a God who has the best Master Plan for us. Perfection in Christ is not really a one-time thing, it is a process and only God can complete it
Thanks for being here. God bless!
Oh, yes–that perfection thing is a tool of you know who!! I’ve let go of a lot of it–but I’m still a control freak–there’s always more to work on, and I do better when I “rest in Him–Who is Perfection (the only One)”. Thanks for the wonderful visit here today! God bless you.
Thanks Caddo for leaving your words of inspiration. God is the only perfect one.
Yeah, we say it, but it’s agonizingly hard to recognize it in ourselves, then work up the courage to tell God we want to give it up, and finally, look up and say, ‘Okay, God, take it away, I want to be different. Help me resolve the stuff in my life that causes this drive for perfection. Help me get beyond this need for perfection.” The good news is God does the work, and I can go on in the face of the critics and those who dismiss what I’m doing as unimportant. Amen and amen.
Absolutely right! Thanks Jo! Amen to that!
